This low carb sangria is a great way to have a summery cocktail without worrying about overdoing the carbs. The trick is to avoid full orange slices in the sangria and to release the oils from the orange peel.
How to Make a Low Carb Sangria with Red Wine
When making a low carb sangria, one of the best ways to reduce the carbs in the drink is to refrain from using full orange slices in the drink. Most sangrias contain a significant amount of fruit and the main issue is that the fruit (orange slices specifically) absorb quite a bit of the drink and without being able to eat the fruit, it's a waste of the drink. The solution is to cut them into strips (removing most of the fruit flesh) and giving them a bit of a twist to release the oils from the peel before putting them into the drink.
Tips and Tricks for this Low Carb Sangria?
- For this recipe, I used natural flavored water enhancers for additional flavor as they are a quick and easy way to add flavor without adding carbs and unneeded sugars.
- You will also need a dry red wine that is low in carbs.
- I used orange vodka in this recipe, which I think really adds quite a bit of flavor. If you desire, you can substitute for other types or just use standard vodka.
- Flavored club soda such as lime club soda works best in this drink but if you are unable to acquire some, feel free to use normal club soda.
What Wines are Low in Carbs?
There are plenty of low carb wines but the ones that are the lowest in carbohydrates are:
- Chianti.
- Merlot.
- Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Pinot Grigio.
- Sangiovese.
- Shiraz.
I will personally search up a brand while browsing the wine aisle at the local store to get an idea as to what brands offer the lowest carb count. Here's a list of some brands that you may find helpful: Low Carb Wines
I hope you enjoy this drink as much as I did!
